More about Aarhus
Founded by the Vikings because of its strategic location on the Jutland peninsula, Århus is the second largest city in Denmark and the unofficial cultural capital. Århus University is located here, as well, giving the town a young, energetic, coffeehouse feel. Yet, Århus blends old and new – from the medieval trappings of the old town to the more modern surrounding areas. The most popular attraction is perhaps Den Gamle By (The Old Town), an open-air museum depicting early Danish life. Other noteworthy museums include the Mosegard (a 250-acre museum of prehistory) and the Århus Art Museum, which showcases Danish art. Also, check out the Gothic cathedral in the city's old section, as well as the Von Frue Kirke, which boasts a medieval crypt church. The annual Århus Festival in September is one of the most celebrated cultural events in Europe.
