Balmoral has been the home of royalty since 1853, when Prince Albert purchased the castle for Victoria. While the ballroom is the lone sector open to the public, it promises a worthwhile visit, thanks to its impressive collection of art, china, porcelain, and tartans. The estate tour also includes a stop by the scenic gardens and the carriage hall, which features several royal carriages and a china exhibit. Pony rides are available. A café and gift shop are located on-site.

This castle is the site of Mel Gibson's film remake of Shakespeare's "Hamlet." This remarkable structure, noted for its striking architecture, has withstood a long and often grim history. Following the 1715 Rebellion, the castle fell on hard times, although an extensive restoration project in 1925 saw Dunnottar regain its former glory.
