The Mexican Navy was nationalized on June 1, 1917 when the merchant ship Tabasco set sail with an all-Mexican crew. To commemorate, June 1 has traditionally been a day of celebration and feasting in many of Mexico's port towns. In Acapulco, regattas are held and decorated ships fill the harbor.
