Akron Guide  » More About Akron: Overview

Overview

Location, location, location. It couldn't be better than Akron, one of the first towns along the Erie Canal in the hills of the Western Reserve. From Akron vacation travelers passing through to industrialists seeking the ideal spot to manufacture and ship their goods and entrepreneurs looking to capitalize on both, Akron's location made it a boom town in the 19th century.

Since the end of the 1880s, Akron became home to BF Goodrich and Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company earning it the distinction of being the rubber capital of the nation. As the rubber business faded, the city turned to the research and development of polymers, making Akron world-renowned for polymer advancement. On the edible side, Akron also introduced us waffle cones and Cracker Jacks.

Akron events are ceaseless; enjoy your cracker jacks along with peanuts at Canal Park Stadium, home to the Akron Aeros baseball team. If there isn't a game going on, there are still plenty of things to do in Akron with historical sights, Akron tours, restaurants and museums aplenty. Shoppers will love the stores of Quaker Square, housed in the former Quaker Oats mill building, while visiting Akron. With so many intriguing attractions and a prime location only 30 minutes from two major airports and punctuated by the natural beauty of Cuyahoga Falls, an Akron visit is perfect for business or leisure travelers.
