ALEXANDRIA. The rustic interior of this restaurant is full of hunting items, rough-hewn furniture, a 16th-century stone fireplace, and vividly patterned Native American items. The relaxed environment pays homage to outdoor sports of all kinds, including hunting, fishing, boating, and kayaking. But don't let the casual setting fool you – cuisine is of the highest quality, and the menu features oysters, steaks, and seafood, as well as hamburgers and an excellent soft-shell crab sandwich. The menu changes daily to capitalize on the freshest ingredients, such as Maine lobster, local salmon, and fresh produce.

ALEXANDRIA. An innovative American menu make this an outstanding choice for a special evening. Dinner options range from simple and light to hearty and complex. The most popular item is pecan-crusted filet of rockfish, served in garlic sauce with a surprising side of succotash. Fried seafood, including shrimp and catfish, has a spicy kick. A huge wine list (more than 1000 bottles) is available courtesy of Planet Wine located next door. Patrons also love the atmosphere: cheery yellow walls, pressed-tin ceilings, and lighting fashioned from Erector sets. After dinner, head to one of the two relaxing lounges behind and upstairs from the cafe where live music is occasionally offered. Casual attire.

ALEXANDRIA. An historic dining room with a storied past adds a unique touch to meals at Gadsby's. Once a "publick house" frequented by patriots and presidents, the restaurant still exudes late 18th-century charm, common to the era when George Washington attended balls here. Every last detail, from plates and silverware to cuisine, reaches back in time. Dishes include cornbread-stuffed roast duck in Madiera sauce, Colonial Game Pye, and traditional English desserts. Entertainment is also provided, and costumed performers provide period music and merriment. Reservations recommended. Business casual attire.

ALEXANDRIA. If you're looking for an extremely laid-back atmosphere reminiscent of America's heartland, this is a great choice. People enjoy the jukebox's country tunes and stark, turn-of-the-century Western landscapes, but the biggest draws are huge bowls of piping-hot chili, served in a variety of styles. Try beefy Texas chili, spicy-hot Cincinnati chili, or satisfying vegetarian chili. You'll also find plenty of sandwiches and salads. If you can't get enough chili, get a gallon to take along or buy spices to recreate the taste at home.

ALEXANDRIA. An old, renovated warehouse serves as the setting for Eve, which offers diners two distinct settings: a casual yet sophisticated bistro-style restaurant and the more intimate Chef's Tasting Room. The bistro is known for its creative cocktails and tempting dishes like roasted breast of Guinea hen with morels, cipolinnis and fava beans. The tasting room, meanwhile, wins praise for an enterprising, five-course prix fixe that features pan-roasted rockfish with braised onions and fricassée of rabbit with yellow carrots and pumpkin. On par with the cuisine, the wine list has itself garnered numerous accolades and awards.
