ALEXANDRIA. Don't miss the delectable homemade raisin bread at this Old Town favorite, tucked inside a pleasant yellow house. The dining room offers excellent views of the bustling street, and in winter, a romantic fire is usually roaring. Brunch dishes are innovative and perfectly prepared – try salmon and crabcake Benedict, banana buttermilk pancakes, or (best of all) French toast made with that homemade raisin bread and topped with caramelized apples. Items from the lunch menu are featured as well, including pastas, salads, and sandwiches. Plenty of drinks and great service add to the fun. Casual attire.

Don't let the grocery store setting throw you – this chic, sophisticated New American restaurant inside Balducci's is an impressive choice whatever the occasion. Each dish is superbly done and artistically presented, from the black-eyed pea fritters appetizer to main courses like anise-spiced salmon with yucca couscous. The excellent wine list offers a number of ideal accompaniments, too. For a grand finale, don't miss the wild fig-cassis cake with mustard ice cream and maple caviar. Outstanding Sunday brunches as well. Walk-ins welcome.

ALEXANDRIA. A favorite place for dinner fajitas, burritos, and enchiladas, South Austin Grill is also popular at breakfast. Traditional morning meals include Belgian waffles, pancakes with sausage or bacon, and delicious potato dishes. Sunday brunch also brings on Macho Tacos, Western omelets, steak ranchero, and luscious cornmeal pancakes. The dining room boasts colorful Southwestern touches and upbeat music. In warm weather, the attractive patio is a terrific option.
