ALEXANDRIA. A romantic spot for an authentic French meal, Chez Andrée combines fine cuisine with a relaxed, casual atmosphere. In French tradition, each dish is prepared with high quality ingredients and is given beautiful presentation and great taste. Thanks to reasonable prices and spacious seating, the restaurant is a popular choice for groups and does a brisk lunch business. Representative entrees include grilled rack of lamb, broiled filet mignon, roasted half-duck, and sauteed rainbow trout. Sweetbreads, calf's brains, and veal kidneys delight true francophiles.

ALEXANDRIA. Don't miss the delectable homemade raisin bread at this Old Town favorite, tucked inside a pleasant yellow house. The dining room offers excellent views of the bustling street, and in winter, a romantic fire is usually roaring. Brunch dishes are innovative and perfectly prepared – try salmon and crabcake Benedict, banana buttermilk pancakes, or (best of all) French toast made with that homemade raisin bread and topped with caramelized apples. Items from the lunch menu are featured as well, including pastas, salads, and sandwiches. Plenty of drinks and great service add to the fun. Casual attire.

ALEXANDRIA. Tourists flock to this low-key Old Town bar and restaurant for good reason – it offers excellent Italian dishes in a low-lit, comfortable atmosphere. Traditional favorites include linguini with clam sauce and terrific seafood and shrimp dishes. The chef has a way with veal, from marsala to piccata, and pastas come topped with hearty homemade sauces, fresh vegetables, hearty sausages, and flavorful cheeses.
