CENTRAL CANAL RING.   Given Amsterdam's proximity to the water, it's not surprising that boats have a long history of being adapted into living quarters. This museum illustrates just how that's possible. The circa-1914 barge, "Hendrika Maria," moored in one of the city's canals, was transformed into an 1125-square-foot home for a skipper and his family. Although no one occupies the boat now, exhibits with photos, slides and models provide insight into how the feat was accomplished, how central heat and running water were installed, and how the vessel is maintained yet today.   (© 10Best)
