FURTHER AFIELD. This expansive city park, begun in 1934, offers a wide variety of wildlife and is an ideal place to get away from the city proper and enjoy its leisure facilities. A rowing course was the park's first attraction and still serves as a popular pastime. You'll also find a pond on which to cruise in small, rented vessels and a museum whose exhibits detail area flora and fauna. Biking, walking and jogging paths are also available, as are an open-air theater, children's playgrounds and a marvelous organic goat farm. Hop on the Museum Tram which runs along the park in the summer months and orientate yourself at the Visitor's Center by the main entrance.

DE PIJP. Should you crave a brief respite while at Albert Cuypmarkt or are simply looking for a place to relax in the sun, this small, beautiful park makes a great destination. Named after the doctor who conceived of the area, the park lies amid 19th-century homes in a city suburb. The park offers, among other features, a fountain and grassy lawns, perfect for lazing the day away.

MUSEUM QUARTER / VONDELPARK. In the 19th century, this park was created to give Amsterdam's residents a chance to commune with nature. It's still a favorite destination for city-weary denizens. On any given day, you'll find folks relaxing, rollerblading, delighting in the sunshine, and taking in arts and entertainment programs at the open-air theater. You'll even notice parrots and the odd stork flying around. Children have their own play area, complete with a shallow pool, and buskers often congregate, hoping to merit a few coins. It's also home to the Filmmuseum, Blauwe Theehuis and children's restaurant Kinderkookkafé. Named after poet Joost van den Vondel, whose statue watches over the goings-on.
