SOUTH OF DOWNTOWN.   This retail shop offers much more than outdoor gear. Two of the staff are certified Denali guides, boasting more than 40 trips up Mt. McKinley between them. Their expertise serves shoppers well since they not only help you choose appropriate gear, they help you plan a trip itinerary. They also rent equipment and offer extensive supply lists so you won't forget a thing. Don't want to carry your gear on the boat or airplane? Ship it ahead, and the shop will hold it until you arrive in Anchorage. In addition to hiking/mountaineering equipment, you can rent sea kayaks, snow shoes, and cross-country skis.   (© 10Best)
