7. Girdwood

GIRDWOOD.   This scenic resort town is located 40 miles southeast of Anchorage, and it makes a great daytrip regardless of the time of year. Girdwood was founded as a gold mining town, but the presence of Mt. Alyeska has turned it into a winter ski haven and a summer golf destination.
