DOWNTOWN. Alaska's oldest steakhouse is still one of the best places to dine in Anchorage. Start your evening with a martini at the atmospheric bar. Parisian streetlamps and a mural of the City of Light give the establishment its name. For your dining pleasure try the house special filet mignon. This flavorful four inch thick slice of beef is broiled to your specifications. Prime rib and New York strip smothered in Cajun mushrooms are other favorites. For dessert, the macadamia-nut pie and the Key Lime tart are delicious and large enough to share. Dressy-casual attire. Reservations suggested for dinner.

DOWNTOWN. This fine restaurant, located on the twentieth floor of the Hotel Captain Cook, is decorated with rich teak paneling between floor-to-ceiling windows that provide panoramic sunset views over Cook Inlet. The elegant cuisine is described as "light French" with an emphasis on fresh Alaskan seafood. Try the pan-seared scallops or the tender New Zealand lamb. For a memorable, if upscale version of surf-n-turf, savor the filet mignon with brandy-flamed lobster. The extensive wine cellars boasts more than 1,000 bottles—a varied enough selection to please the most discriminating palate. When locals come here they opt for the five-course set menu. DOWNTOWN. This brewpub became an immediate sensation when it debuted in 1997. Its menu features dishes like spicy fried calamari, amber ale-battered halibut, spit-roasted prime rib, and applewood-grilled salmon with garlic mashed potatoes. Also making excellent accompaniments to the craft brews on tap are the restaurant's brick-oven pizzas. Oven-roasted bread pudding is the special house dessert, and the always-crowded brewhouse is invariably lively.

MIDTOWN. Want to experience Alaskan dining, local style? Try Gwennie's for huge portions and friendly regulars that will explain the memorabilia on the wall and wax nostalgic about the day President Carter and his wife dined among them. Gwennie's is open all day, serving crab omelets with reindeer sausage for breakfast, fried halibut sandwiches for lunch, and barbecued salmon for dinner. Gwennie's also serves what is, perhaps, the best bloody mary in all of Anchorage. Casual attire.

DOWNTOWN. Since 1960, Anchorage's best spot for burgers has been the Lucky Wishbone. These quarter-pound delights come smothered with the condiments of your choice, though the Swiss and Bacon burger is a particular favorite. "The Bone" also serves addictive fried chicken and hot fudge milkshakes that are sure to weaken the resolve of the most dedicated dieter. The Lucky Wishbone does not serve alcohol or allow smoking, but they do accept credit cards. Casual attire.

DOWNTOWN. A small house built in 1916 is the setting for this nationally recognized restaurant, a local institution for over 20 years. Casual elegance describes both the atmosphere and cuisine. A typical starter is king crab-stuffed squash blossoms, although Caspian Sea caviar is popular and always on the menu. (Appetizers, entrees, and desserts are rotated weekly.) The Caesar salad feeds two and is prepared tableside. For dinner, feast on creative dishes like macadamia nut-encrusted halibut with coconut curry sauce and mango chutney. The 11,000-bottle wine cellar boasts over 400 foreign vintages.

MIDTOWN. The Moose's Tooth is a pub that brews and serves more than beer. In addition to their alcoholic offerings—lagers, ales, stouts, porters, and ambers—they brew their own cream soda, root beer, and ginger ale. Homemade brick oven pizzas accompany your beverage. You can choose from over 40 toppings or select one of the house pizzas such as smoked salmon with cream cheese or a white pizza with artichoke hearts, feta cheese, and mushrooms. If you are just looking for a snack with your brew be sure to try the fried bread. It comes with spreads of roasted garlic and gorgonzola cheese. Casual attire. Reservations accepted.

Start your evening in the bar, with a glass of single-malt scotch or an import beer and savor the sunset over scenic Cook Inlet. Meals at "Simon's" (as the locals call it) are a delight whether you favor land or sea entrees. The aged prime rib is world-class, and the thick steaks are hand-cut to order. Nightly specials usually emphasize fresh seafood – the blackened Alaska salmon and the macadamia nut-stuffed halibut are two standouts.
