MIDTOWN. Enjoy a two dollar movie with chair-side cocktail service, including the house special margarita. This spot is popular with families, who order nachos, tacos, and other Southwestern grub for the group and then send the kiddies to the Under-21 balcony to eat and view. A separate grill area offers quieter dining out of sight of the movie. Try soy-marinated halibut or a made-to-order pizza.

MIDTOWN. If you're craving Thai, you'll almost certainly be directed to this appealing restaurant. The unassuming place serves fabulous food and offers a nice change of pace from the ubiquitous halibut presented at other Anchorage restaurants. Start with house special "fresh rolls" or a bowl of fiery Tom Khar Gai soup, a concoction of coconut milk, chicken, lemongrass, and ginger. Pan-fried garlic chicken makes an excellent entrée, as does traditional pad Thai. Thai iced tea is a wonderful beverage accompaniment.

MIDTOWN. The elegant, Danish-Scandinavian décor tips you off that this is one of Anchorage's finest dining venues. During their preparation they are never heated above 115 degrees, and they are served cold or room temperature. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds are combined in innovative ways to create a healthy, satisfying meal. Traditionalists will want to sample the Danish fish stew or a salmon sandwich on rye. DOWNTOWN. This traditional Japanese restaurant is especially popular with Anchorage's professionals who come here for business lunches of ramen noodle soups and bento boxes, but if it's sushi you are craving, plan to come for dinner since the sushi bar is only open in the evenings. If sushi isn't your thing, order the shabu-shabu dinner: diners cook their own meat and vegetables in hot broth. Teriyaki beef or salmon are the house specials and come with miso soup and a salad. Smart-casual to business attire. Reservations accepted.

SOUTH ANCHORAGE. The name of the restaurant says it all—this is authentic South Central Mexican cooking. Forget about Americanized burritos and fajitas, and feast on the fresh salsa, mole poblano, or the homemade guacamole with chunks of tender fresh avocado. For something different try the Nopales con Huevo, which are cactus pieces scrambled with eggs. Vegetarians can request a special separate menu. For dessert, you have a choice of caramel custard or ice cream. Casual attire. Reservations accepted.

DOWNTOWN. Orso resembles a giant woodland lodge—the restaurant and bar is a spacious 6,000 square feet of wood posts, fireplaces, and low lighting. Contrary to expectations, the food is pure Old World Italian. Starters consist of marinated olives, mussels in lemon sauce, or fresh salads tossed tableside. Main course pasta dishes are served family style—dig into the wild mushroom ravioli or the spaghetti with oven roasted garlic, lemon herb butter, and giant meatballs. All pastas are made fresh daily by the Alaska Pasta Company. Atkins devotees need not fear, as there are plenty of seafood and meat entrée options. The osso bucco, using a lamb shank rather than the traditional veal, is served with sweet and sour onions, roma tomatoes, and kalamata olives on a bed of creamy polenta. Voted Anchorage's favorite dessert, the molten chocolate cake is too good to pass up. Smart-casual to stylish attire. Reservations suggested.
