DOWNTOWN. This lunch spot is most popular with Anchorage's young professionals, thanks in part to its location in a downtown high-rise. Quiches, soups, and salads are made fresh each day, but the hearty sandwiches are the real temptation. Try the veggie pita with cucumber dressing or the roast beef with creamy horseradish dressing. Another favorite is the turkey sandwich topped with cranberry sauce.

DOWNTOWN. Alaskans love a big hearty breakfast, so it isn't a surprise that this all-day breakfast joint is popular. The house special is sourdough pancakes made with starter supplied by a miner in 1939. Another favorite is the Alaska sampler composed of reindeer sausage, smoked halibut, and lox dip. Homemade chicken soup with matzo balls, hearty reindeer stew, and a wide selection of traditional sandwiches round out the menu. Beer and wine are available to complement your meal. Casual to smart-casual attire. Reservations not accepted, but takeout orders can be placed in advances.

MIDTOWN. The elegant, Danish-Scandinavian décor tips you off that this is one of Anchorage's finest dining venues. The dining room walls are cool cream stucco, accented with paintings by local artists. More than 40 wines are available by the glass, and the wine bar itself is a destination for many. But don't deny yourself! Jens' food is too good to miss. Jens' has a large selection of vegan and raw meals available. During their preparation they are never heated above 115 degrees, and they are served cold or room temperature. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds are combined in innovative ways to create a healthy, satisfying meal. Traditionalists will want to sample the Danish fish stew or a salmon sandwich on rye. Smart-casual attire. Reservations accepted.

DOWNTOWN. Since 1960, Anchorage's best spot for burgers has been the Lucky Wishbone. These quarter-pound delights come smothered with the condiments of your choice, though the Swiss and Bacon burger is a particular favorite. "The Bone" also serves addictive fried chicken and hot fudge milkshakes that are sure to weaken the resolve of the most dedicated dieter. The Lucky Wishbone does not serve alcohol or allow smoking, but they do accept credit cards. Casual attire.

MIDTOWN. Vegans, vegetarians, and those just looking for a healthful lunch will appreciate the fare at this small café. You need to place and pickup your own order at the stand-up bar, but well-polished walnut tables provide seating while you eat. Organic granola and a tofu scramble are available for breakfast, while a typical lunch is falafel with tomatoes and cucumbers or a Greek wrap with feta. A juice bar serves smoothies and more than 30 varieties of tea. Be sure to bring cash because the Middle Way doesn't accept credit cards. No alcohol. Reservations not accepted.

Stuffed cabbage, lasagnas, and artisanal breads are available for takeaway. The market has a huge selection of prepared ethnic foods, as well as a variety of ingredients for your own cooking. The fish counter always has the freshest catches, and they will ship your purchase anywhere in the US or Canada, so you don't have to carry it with you.

DOWNTOWN. Snow City became Anchorage's "favorite new restaurant" when it opened in 1998. They continue to please with creative breakfast dishes—served until 5pm—such as a tofu scramble or eggs benedict. The homemade granola and salmon cakes are also worth a taste.
