About Antwerp Attractions & Activities
Far from living in the shadow of Brussels its larger, more famous neighbor Belgium's "second city" has a personality and pace that make it a favorite destination of both regional folks and tourists. Arriving in Antwerp by train is like stepping back in time, thanks to the spectacular, fully refurbished neo-Baroque Central Station. Conveniently located next door is the Antwerp Zoo, where lions, zebras and other exotics live in Art Nouveau surroundings designed more than 150 years ago. Antwerp has many excellent churches too, and its most famous are Sint-Jacobskerk, burial place of Rubens; Sint-Pauluskerk, repository of stunning sculptures and paintings by Flemish masters; and the towering Cathedral of Our Lady, the largest church in the Low Countries. Since Antwerp's earliest beginnings were as a port city, no visit is complete without a trip to the Maritime Museum. While you're at it, view the port from the water boat tours on Flandria Scheldetochten are a wonderful, unique way to take in the city's maritime history. -- Kelly Boland, Contributing Writer
