OLD CITY. This museum, both a home and a shop, validates the important place the Plantin family holds in the history of printing. In fact, the facility's priceless archives and printing presses hold world heritage status. In the late 1500s, Christoffle Plantin's company was incredibly successful, and in later years, its status was raised even higher under the tutelage of his grandson, Balthasar Moretus. Their most famous books include a Librorium Prohibitorum, which lists books the church declared unfit for Christians, and a Biblia Regia, an eight-volume bible printed in several languages. Two typefaces – Garamond and Plantin – were also invented by the company. After seeing the workshop, visitors can tour the residential part of the urban mansion, complete with family portraits by Rubens.
