OLD CITY. This stone fortress was built along the banks of the Scheldt in the early 13th century. Considered Antwerp's oldest building, it was originally part of the fortifications surrounding the Old City. More recently, however, it has been used as a prison and as an archaeological museum. From the early 1950s until 2008, it was home to the National Maritime Museum. The latter will be moving to a new location in 2010 (www.mas.be). For the time being the interior of De Steen is not open to visitors, whilst a decision is made on its future use. (© 10Best) More Details for De Steen (National Maritime Museum)
