LATIN QUARTER. The largest church in the Low Countries is a wonderful example of Brabant Gothic architecture (a more ornate, exuberant variation). By most counts it took 168 years – from 1352 until 1520 – to complete the entire structure, which was begun as a modest chapel dedicated to the Virgin. The cathedral has an impressive seven aisles and 125 pillars, and its 123-meter spire is the tallest in the Low Countries. (Originally, five spires were planned, but as the project grew and changed, only one ended up being built.) Interior treasures include four Rubens works depicting The Raising of the Cross, The Descent from the Cross, The Resurrection and the Assumption of the Virgin.
