4. Den Engel

OLD CITY.   Given its location in the main square at Grote Markt, this bar makes a wonderful first stop for pub-crawlers. It's an equally good stop for sightseers who want to sit and enjoy a Belgian beer while gazing at the Brabo Fountain and the City Hall. The old-style café serves snacks to go with the country's most famous brews. The place's name gives a nod to the gilt angel that sits atop the building – "den engel" translates as "the angel."
