Navan Fort, originally known as Emain Macha (Gaelic for 'the twins of Macha') and dating back to 600 BC, was the first capital of Ulster. The site is archeologically important because it supports evidence of human life for thousands of years. This site is comprised of an earthen mound surrounded by a circular ditch. Navan Fort also has mythological ties to the legend of Queen Macha and Queen Maeve of Connaught. The visitors center offers insight into the region's Mesolithic, Neolithic, and Bronze Age eras through an interactive exhibition, film and living history display. This historic site provides a glimpse into pre-Christian Ireland and the ways of the Celts. It is a short walk from the visitors center to the mound itself, or you can drive – the helpful staff will provide directions.
