Built in the late 1700s, the observatory was the vision of Archbishop Robinson. The diocesan leader followed the works of local amateur astrologer Reverend W.A. Hamilton, and believed that Armagh would be a perfect location for studying the celestial bodies. The observatory is internationally renowned for several of its scientific contributions. It isn't open to the public but visitors can see it from the 14-acre park in which it's set. In 1968, the site opened an adjacent planetarium, which continues to provide the public a view of the stars. Visitors need to book shows ahead; there are usually four shows in the summer and seasonal ones at other times. Call ahead to find out what's on.
