DOWNTOWN. Maybe Thomas Wolfe couldn't go home again, but you certainly can visit his boyhood residence. The Asheville-born writer immortalized this mountain community in his writings, and fans delight to see the boarding house where he grew up. A visitor center behind the home presents artifacts from his life, along with a biographical program and a gift shop. Guided tours of the home highlight period furnishings and significant events that occurred in particular rooms. Throughout the year, cultural events are hosted at the site as well. (© 10Best) After a six-year restoration of Old Kentucky Home, the childhood home of Thomas Wolfe reopened in 2004. A noted author in early 20th-century American literature, Wolfe immortalized the North Market Street residence in his famous autobiographical novel, Look Homeward, Angel. The Victorian home and adjoining visitors center housing personal effects from the Wolfe family, are open to the public.
