DOWNTOWN. Celebrated for his facility with food and fine dining, chef-owner of Bouchon, Michel Baudouin, now brings his culinary finesse to Asheville. Dining amid sunny colors, aged brick, and terra cotta tiles, patrons choose from large and small plates, treating themselves to moules frites prepared three different ways, roast chicken fragrant with thyme, a classic croque monsieur, homemade patés, and made-daily quiches, crêpes, and pastas. An assortment of French wines admirably maintains the theme.

When you're in the mood for good, basic Mexican fare at reasonable prices, give El Chapala a try. It's not a concept restaurant, but it turns out the satisfying dishes you've grown to love, and it does them well. The flavors are appealing, and whether you're in the market for enchiladas, burritos, combo plates, or more, you'll be pleased with the results. Expect to see groups of people sharing chips and salsa and indulging in large, frosty margaritas.

DOWNTOWN. Devoted to conviviality, Fiore's is ideal when you're dining with a group. A comfortable space made warm with golden hues and mellow woods, the restaurant delivers Tuscan cuisine that's lush and satisfying. Try, for example, grilled duck breast with figs and a chianti reduction, or sample beef medallions with a mushroom demi-glace. Pizzas and pastas also make appearances, and family-style platters let diners share the goodness around the table. Live entertainment on weekends is more reason to head over.

The menu boasts colorful, well-seasoned concoctions like Baja Beach fish tacos and blue corn chicken enchiladas with black beans and rice. For a departure from standard Mexican fare, try the ensalada Camila: bacon-wrapped shrimp, tomato, avocado, mango, red onion, toasted pumpkin seeds, queso fresco and herb vinaigrette on a bed of fresh spinach. For the best atmosphere, ask for a table on the patio.

The menu dazzles with inventive numbers like white shrimp and crab enchiladas with chipotle cream sauce, rack of lamb with roasted potatoes and smoked tomato sauce, and shitake mushroom and roasted tomato tacos. Regarding libations, Limones features fantastic margaritas and high-end tequilas.

In a space dotted with candlelight, representations of Hindu deities, and other exotic artifacts, eager patrons tuck into samosas and pakoras as prelude to entrees based on seafood, vegetables, lamb, and chicken. The Mediterranean menu takes inspiration from an area ranging from North Africa to the Middle East, offering dishes like Moroccan game hen tagine, arborio-crusted sea scallops, braised lamb shank, and Catalonian paella. Adding to the rustic, flavorful fare are appetizers like grilled octopus and pan-seared veal sweetbreads and desserts like lavender crème brûlée and Persian baklava. The Cavicchis love pork, and the menu readily exhibits their fondness by way of a pork belly steak, glazed pork shank, and housemade fettuccine with wild boar ragu. You'll also delight in crispy duck confit, homemade sausages, braised beef rolls, and a classic osso bucco. Vaulted ceilings, a black and red color scheme accented with splashy modern canvases, and gleaming chandeliers provide a backdrop to the lush cuisine.
