10Best's Asheville Events
-- Kelly Sigmon, 10Best Travel Editor
With each season, Asheville finds reason to celebrate, and in every month, its festivities are abundant. Together, they honor holidays, pay homage to heritage, and give ample indication of interests and passions. They also toss out a welcome mat to anyone who would join in on the fun. Certainly Asheville's best-known party is Bele Chere, a summertime extravaganza of music, food, and art. It pulls folks from all over the region to bask in the heat and find out what it's like to live and laugh well, Asheville-style. Throughout the mountains, outdoor activities call to families and individuals, and the French Broad River Festival and Lake Eden Arts Festival grant all comers a chance to frolic in the water, play games, and simply revel in our common humanity. Aside from the big picture, the city also looks to more narrow leisuretime loves. For example, some events promote herbs and gardening, while others make it a point to appreciate mountain dance and folklore. Still others welcome like-minded people to involve themselves in antiques, road races, art, and sports. Plus, as you knew it would, Biltmore demonstrates a practiced party-throwing expertise by ushering in spring with the Festival of Flowers and by giving thanks with the Harvest Celebration. As the year winds down, Biltmore also dresses up the holidays with lavish abandon, draping the picture-perfect mansion with garland and greenery in a recreation of 19th-century opulence. The Grove Park Inn gets in on the action too, showcasing elaborate gingerbread houses created by some of the nation's most painstaking bakers and artists.
