10Best's Asheville Nightlife

-- Kelly Sigmon, 10Best Travel Editor

Nightlife in Asheville isn't a big-city production, full of raucous clubs and exclusive hideaways. Instead, it's more laid-back, generally characterized by socializing in pubs, bars, and cafes. That said, a solid population of college students ensures that the scene isn't staid by any means, and energetic dance clubs like Scandals and Z Lounge promise the motion and excitement that young fun-seekers are craving. Live music is, however, Asheville's claim to fame, and the city gives up-and-coming musicians lots of places to test their talents. The Orange Peel is one of the most well-known venues for bigger-name bands to play, and good acoustics make any experience a memorable one. On the local front, the New French Bar gives all comers a voice and keeps the kitchen staff serving late. If you'd rather relax in a more intimate club, consider Tressa's, which presents awesome live jazz and blues, or restaurants like Vincenzo's, which brings in well-received performers, often without a cover charge, to treat patrons to signature sounds. If catching up with friends over a drink or two is your favorite after-hours practice, Asheville is ideal for that too. Barley's is a perennial haven for good times, especially when they involve beer and pizza, and Zambra kicks up the style quotient with exotic ambience, tapas, and sensational wines. Another classic, Jack of the Wood, is devoted to one-on-one conversation, not to mention seduction by well-poured pints of local ales.
