WEST ASHEVILLE. When you come across a topnotch burger joint, you can be pretty sure that the beef is going to be excellent and the toppings broad. But, you don't usually expect fresh-made salads, hot and cold sandwiches, and a variety of vegetarian offerings. That's the way Burgermeister's likes to shake things up. Burgers are spiced with everything from Jamaican jerk seasoning to guacamole, jalapenos, bleu cheese, and even Guinness. Healthy oils and ingredients are standard in all preparations, but you're on your own with the milkshakes and homemade chocolate chip cookies!

DOWNTOWN. This tiny, local success story is just the sort of place you want to frequent when the weather's chilly and spring seems far away. It turns out amazing Latin-Caribbean fare, lavishing freshness and flavor on its menu with abandon and attracting a strong, loyal clientele in the process. While the interior is subdued, the food absolutely sings. Lush soups, lively, savory fish burritos, exemplary margaritas, a wonderful pork plate, shrimp empanadas, and fresh, zesty salsas are among the delicious options. The menu changes to feature seasonal ingredients, and the place even sells its own hot sauce.

DOWNTOWN. This popular Atlanta-based noodle joint enjoys comparable appeal in downtown Asheville, and it's pretty certain that you'll have to wait for a seat if you don't go early. Serving a wide variety of Asian-themed dishes, Doc Chey's offers large portions at incredibly reasonable prices. Thai coconut chicken soup makes for a wonderful appetizer, as do the shrimp rolls. Main courses include everything from Szechuan vegetables to Vietnamese vermicelli and udon noodles. Broths, tinged with fresh herbs, are flavorful and ideal for slurping.

BILTMORE AREA. Convenient to Biltmore Village shopping, this pleasant Mexican restaurant attracts visitors in search of hearty meals. The menu boasts colorful, well-seasoned concoctions like Baja Beach fish tacos and blue corn chicken enchiladas with black beans and rice. For a departure from standard Mexican fare, try the ensalada Camila: bacon-wrapped shrimp, tomato, avocado, mango, red onion, toasted pumpkin seeds, queso fresco and herb vinaigrette on a bed of fresh spinach. For the best atmosphere, ask for a table on the patio.

DOWNTOWN. La Caterina is a charmingly quaint restaurant conveniently situated near the downtown arts centers. The European décor is accented with cherub-painted ceilings and half-tiled walls, and the fare is delightfully authentic Italian. Dine informally as you watch the pastas and breads used in the restaurant being made from scratch. Beef lovers will love the fact that all steaks are dry-aged prime Angus Beef. Fine wine list, too.

At first glance, this restaurant/brew pub/movie theater never fails to attract attention. From the metallic, oddly curved exterior to the enormous, purple gorilla, first-time patrons often wonder just what to expect. Inside, the sparse, gently used decor is the perfect backdrop for the restaurant's extensive selection of locally crafted microbrews and eclectic menu. Diners can choose from a variety of salads, quesadillas, sandwiches, pastas and pizzas, each named after movie and television icons. The local favorite is Popeye's Spinach burger, a savory spinach patty with grilled onions, mushrooms, and cheese. There are also a variety of gourmet pizza selections as well as a create-your-own pizza option and a wide variety of crusts and sauces from which to choose. Two movies play nightly on the big screen, and selections change weekly.

Whether you're in the mood for just drinks or for a full dinner, Charlotte Street Grill and Pub is your place. The reasonably priced, traditional American menu includes pastas, burgers, steaks and seafood. Some say the atmosphere in the dining room alone is the reason to come here. The room boasts dark wood walls and features deep, red velvet booths.
