DOWNTOWN. Rich with visual interest and warmth, Bistro 1896 is a delightful destination for both food and drinks. Its American cuisine gets a kick in the pants from creative chefs, who ply diners with all sorts of fabulous fare. At brunch, the bounty includes pan-fried mountain trout, sourdough French toast, build-your-own omelets, and a shrimp and polenta Benedict. A Bloody Mary bar also lets you customize your own cocktail. Plus, a Pack Square location and outdoor seating give patrons a terrific vantage point for checking out the local foot traffic.

BILTMORE AREA. With its graceful summerhouse furnishings and walls of windows, this appealing restaurant is a far cry from its humble barn origins (albeit architect-designed). No, Deerpark is now all about eating well and eating much. Its widely-applauded brunches, in fact, attract folks in droves, and even moreso because they're buffet affairs. As you browse the stations, choose your favorites from among dishes like biscuits and gravy, poached salmon, hand-carved prime rib, waffles, omelets, and plenty of salads, vegetables, and desserts. Quite a way to fortify yourself against a busy day.

A classy throwback to '60s-era dining, Frankie Bones seeks to inject big-city culinary perspective into this far-from-dowdy mountain community.
