Athenian "bar culture" is relatively young – only in the past 20 years have American-style nightclubs begun to spring up. Even so, traditional Athenian pastimes remain most popular. During the summer, open-air movie theaters throughout the city entertain multi-generational families, and young professional couples meet at taverns to sip ouzo or the house retsina. Plus, live music is found everywhere. Musicians stroll the streets and wander through bars and restaurants, playing traditional folk songs, bluesy ballads, cool jazz, and modern rock-n-roll. -- Kelly Boland, Contributing Writer
