WESTSIDE. This elegant restaurant is considered one of Atlanta's – perhaps even the South's – finest and is a superb setting for romantic, intimate dinners, special occasions and celebrations. The innovative menu changes daily. Begin with gourmet specialties such as steak tartare with shallots and capers, or foie gras terrine with brioche toast and onion jam. Selecting a main dish poses an even tougher question: will it be wood-grilled breast of squab with potato gratin, or braised red snapper with caramelized turnips? Going wrong is just short of impossible at Bacchanalia.

INMAN PARK. Since opening this sleek eatery, owner-chef Kevin Rathbun has fielded countless interview requests from rags all around the US. The restaurant's post-industrial decor provides the perfect backdrop for Rathbun's singularly innovative New American fare. Dazzling are "Big Plates" (tarragon-roasted chicken) and "Second Mortgage Plates" (Maine lobster and roasted green-chile soft tacos). Despite all the press and hoopla, the place maintains a neighborhood feel, and the patio dining area welcomes nightly walk-in traffic. To land a table inside, however, reservations are a must.

BUCKHEAD. Owner-chef Gerry Klaskala earned his culinary stripes at the celebrated Hedgerose, known for its traditional ambiance and cuisine. These days his Aria, which has been receiving rave reviews since its 2000 debut, has become a fixture on the Buckhead dining scene thanks to its creative "slow food" and sleek atmosphere. Menu highlights include Georgia mountain trout with crab smashed potatoes and haricots vert, and zinfandel braised beef short ribs with celery whipped potatoes and sugar snap peas. Kudos go to the pastry chef whose desserts are fittingly decadent and artfully presented.

BUCKHEAD. This landmark Atlanta dining spot sets the standard for luxury dining in the city. The creative American-Continental cuisine is among the best in the country, and the posh gilt-and-velvet setting makes the restaurant an ideal locale for a celebration dinner, special occasion or first-class business dinner. Try Dover sole with kippers and brown butter or battered lobster tails with Chinese honey mustard, and finish with Kahlua ice cream pie in an Oreo crust. Perfect service and an excellent wine list. Reservations highly recommended.

BUCKHEAD. Contemporary throughout, this chic restaurant offers prime stomping ground for a hip, beautiful crowd. Beneath 40-foot ceilings, theatrical halogen lights wash over black and red harlequins, evocative artwork, freestanding terraces and sleek tables. The New American menu, whose creative dishes are influenced by the cuisine of East Asia, features Chilean sea bass with shiitake mushrooms, hard-to-get oysters, and sushi. Desserts like coconut rice pudding with maple syrup reflect a similar trendiness.

MIDTOWN. Russet tones imbue Mitra with an inviting warmth, and custom fixtures and furnishings hint at the restaurant's light-hearted, hospitable spirit. The cuisine, too, is a kiss on both cheeks. Boasting Latin flair, the menu starts with tender, flash-fried oysters and roasted lamb cabreles taquitos before it shifts to brown sugar-roasted chicken, banana leaf-roasted Gulf snapper, and pull-apart pig with natural mojo reduction. Desserts, created by the resident pastry chef, include tamarind vanilla pound cake and Cuban coffee flan. Great, affordable wines too.

Appetizers like rosemary pine nut popcorn or crab beignets make an excellent prelude to mussels with goat cheese or pan-roasted skate wing. The well-chosen wine list lets you find the perfect vintage to complement your meal. Reservations are not accepted but you may call ahead to have your name placed on a waiting list. MIDTOWN. Located in the Woodruff Arts Center, this sleek, minimalist-inspired dining room is a glamorous spot to dine after catching an exhibit at the High Museum next door. Designer Renzo Piano's crisp, contemporary space certainly leaves a lasting impression, and the views of the main piazza are certain to be conversation topics. The lounge area is a fun, cosmopolitan place to gather with friends over wine and tapas, and the bar staff has created several evocative cocktail choices. In the main dining room, you'll find brasserie-inspired dishes like wild boar ragu and skate wing with butternut squash highlighting the dinner menu.

MIDTOWN. What makes Woodfire Grill an Atlanta favorite is a little more sophisticated than good cornbread. Instead, chef Michael Tuohy concocts tantalizing Northern California dishes using only the freshest local ingredients from organic farmers. Though the menu changes with the seasonal availability of ingredients, reliable favorites include wood-grilled Sonoma artisan duck breast, cured fresh ham, and pan-roasted Puget Sound king salmon.
