MIDTOWN. Pushing the envelopes of urban renewal and multi-use development, Atlantic Station stands poised to emerge as one of the nation's most dynamic districts. Reasons to visit this red-brick "city unto itself" are legion: Popular specialty stores like West Elm and Banana Republic stand alongside busy eateries like The Grape, California Pizza Kitchen, and Claddagh Irish Pub. There's also a 16-screen Regal Cinema, a grocery store, and the first IKEA in the Southeast. Atlantic Station is much more than an open-air shopping center, though, thanks to park areas, wide pedestrian-only corridors, and plenty of luxury lofts and apartments. Heck, the place even has its own zip code!

DOWNTOWN. "Moored" north of Centennial Olympic Park, a massive glass and steel prow beckons modern explorers to discover the wonders that lie deep within the Georgia Aquarium, one of the largest and most architecturally stunning facilities of its kind. Exotic batfish, sea goblins and bowmouth guitarfish are among 100,000 fish and marine animals patrolling the 6-plus million gallons of the deep water exhibit, which is home to the state's most prodigious residents – whale sharks Alice, Trixie, Taroko, and Yushan (Ralph and Norton passed in 2007). A reality thanks to the generosity of Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus, the Georgia Aquarium has strong rescue, rehabilitation and education emphases and serves as one of the state's top special event venues. GRANT PARK. Zoo Atlanta has become well-known for its natural habitats, for providing social structures similar to those found in the wild, and for breeding successes. Social animals, such as primates, live in larger family groups; more solitary animals, such as giant pandas, have individual exhibits. The zoo includes African, Asian, wetland, and rainforest exhibits, as well as a reptile house, an aviary, and several small animal exhibits. Other attractions include train and carousel rides, a children's playground, and rock climbing. Food kiosks, restaurants, and shops are located throughout the zoo.
When school winds down, whether it's for summer, winter, or spring break, we yearn for an escape from the daily grind. We need to relax, yet we also want to create lasting family memories – let's face it, our lives are busier than ever and when we finally take time to get away, we want to make the most of it. Finding the perfect family vacation is a challenge. But our suggestions have appeal for both children and their parents, from amusement parks and historic sites to fine dining restaurants and upscale shopping neighborhoods. Cities do attract their fair share of the tourist trade, but you can still find less crowded spots and create family- and budget-friendly vacations.
