VININGS. Located on the Chattahoochee River where Buckhead meets the historic Vinings area, this romantic restaurant is a wonderful choice for special dinners and celebrations. The lush gardens outside, along with the vaulted ceilings and intricate decor inside, set the scene for a fabulous meal. Award-winning seasonal American cuisine is creatively prepared and artistically presented. Try their Carolina trout with pecans in citrus and brown butter sauce or, for brunch, pheasant ragout with two sunnyside eggs.

MIDTOWN. This attractive, remodeled 1920s bungalow has a pleasant dining room dominated by an exhibition-style kitchen. You can watch chefs whip up fantastic Nouveau Southern dishes like barbecued swordfish with cheese grits, pan-fried catfish with mustard greens and warm pepper jelly, and crab hash with poached eggs and Idaho potatoes – just make sure you don't fill up first on the light-as-air biscuits and cornbread. Though the Southern influence is obvious in the menu and the decor, the surroundings and the presentation are thoroughly modern.

BUCKHEAD. Soak up the mountain-lodge ambience, complete with roaring fireplace and log cabin decor, before ordering fine regional American cuisine. Long-time Southern favorites are given innovative twists with dishes focusing on game, seafood and chops. Try grilled, apple-stuffed trout in honey-pecan sauce for a real treat. Vegetables are organic and consistently delicious, and fresh sourdough bread will almost make you forget all about your entree ... almost.

LITTLE FIVE POINTS. You'll find Southern charm pervading this neighborhood restaurant in everything from the accomplished cuisine to its name. Top-drawer service and an excellent wine list make the experience that much better, and you'll certainly want to linger while you're there and return frequently when you're not. The seasonal menu features molasses-rubbed pork, pan-seared skate wing with stone-ground grits and lemon brown butter, and iron skillet chicken over bacon braised collard greens. Lush flavors definitely reign at this must-visit restaurant.

BUCKHEAD. Just like Atlanta itself, Horseradish Grill's New Southern cuisine manages to reconcile tradition and modernity. The two are brought together with the use of fresh, organic vegetables and the talents of a chef who whips up fried chicken and biscuits, not to mention barbecued duck with Vidalia onions and molasses. At brunch, appetite-grabbers include creamy Logan Turnpike grits with sautéed Gulf shrimp, fire-roasted red peppers and caramelized onions. Idyllic outdoor seating under beautiful oak trees only adds to the appeal.

DECATUR. This casual favorite, located in a refurbished service station, features great wines and an array of gourmet-caliber plates that pay homage to the traditional Southern kitchen: braised beef short ribs with whipped rutabagas and cabbage, salmon croquettes with stone-ground grits and wild mushroom stew, and grilled Niman Ranch pork chops with mac-n-cheese. Their spectacular chocolate cake takes the standard dessert to new heights. Be sure to browse the on-site craft and wine shops. Star-watchers note: Watershed is co-owned by Indigo Girl Emily Saliers.

INMAN PARK. Most newcomers ask, "Son of who?" Though regulars usually chuckle at owner Lenn Storey's claims of familial ties to Deacon Burton (of eponymous Grill fame), two things certainly have been passed down: a knack for delivering delicious soulful eats like those served on Sunday afternoons at your grandmother's house and a strong desire to maintain a friendly, laid-back setting where customers and staff chat away like backdoor neighbors. Don't lunch here without trying their tender pork chops, meatloaf or fried catfish. And, of course, the homemade banana pudding is mandatory. The breakfast crowd, meanwhile, gets the pleasure of Son's famous hoecakes, a pancake cousin made with corn meal.

DOWNTOWN. Located near the Georgia State campus, Thelma's is as down-home, family-friendly a place as you'll find Downtown. Indeed, Southern-style comfort food steals the show at this unassuming dining room, where the kitchen serves up heaping, unforgettable portions of everything from fried chicken and farm-raised catfish to mac-n-cheese and sweet-potato pie. As for the clientele, expect an eclectic mix of neighborhood regulars, stray students in need of home-cooking and folks from nearby corporate HQs – yes, even tie-wearing business execs crowd around the tables from time to time.

MIDTOWN. A mixture of Low Country cuisine, plenty of seafood, and international accents characterizes the menu at Sweet Lowdown. Local favorites include cornmeal-dusted fried grouper, shrimp and grits, and fried calamari. You'll also find ahi tuna with wasabi creme fraiche and grouper ceviche tacos. Any main dish, however, is simply a prelude to Southern dessert mainstays like Deep South Pecan Pie and Wild Turkey Cappuccino. For dinner and a movie, call to see what's playing on the monthly Indie Film Night.

MIDTOWN. This popular restaurant revels in kitsch – yes, the lunch boxes, board games and Barbie-related collectibles are authentic – and serves delicious Southern fare. How does a Sunday brunch of salmon croquettes, Cajun-fried okra and fried green tomatoes sound? Other down-home favorites include mac-n-cheese fritters, BBQ shrimp served over creamy grits, turkey meatloaf and buttermilk fried chicken. Of course, one of their spicy Bloody Marys is a must. And, oh yes, be sure to save room for a slice of carrot cake ... theirs may just be the best in town. Note: call ahead seating only.
