More about Augsburg

Named after Augustus Caesar, this 2000-year-old city boasts truly elegant architecture and a rich past. Two wealthy merchant families, the Welsers and Fuggers, molded almost every facet of the city's development, from its street layout to its notable architecture. Guests who want to learn more about Augsburg's past can visit the Maximilian Museum, which chronicles the city's history and offers superb exhibitions of local gold and silversmiths. You can't help but notice the wealth of Renaissance-style architecture that dominates the city. Prime examples include Town Hall and Perlachturm (or Perlach Tower), both built around 1615-1620. Schaezler Palace features a delightful Rococo (a style uniquely associated with this fair city) ballroom; meanwhile, the Cathedral of Our Lady offers glimpses of marvelous frescoes and contains the oldest stained glass window in Germany. As you walk among the lovely Renaissance buildings, look for the city's emblem, the pine cone, to be carved and emblazoned on a variety of structures. If you want to wander out from the city a bit, head for the royal castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau or hit the Romantic Road that winds past numerous old villages and showcases beautiful landscapes. For a taste of authentic Augsburg, spend an evening in one of its fine restaurants serving regional Swabian cuisine that includes dishes like Spätzle (homemade noodles) and Flädlesuppe (crêpe soup). Shoppers will enjoy perusing the streets of Augsburg in search of good buys, and the Christ Child Market, an annual Christmas market, will bring special delight to seasonal shoppers. The market is one of Germany's oldest and best.
