Austin's slate of events readily demonstrates what's important to the city, proudly showcasing the places and traditions it holds dear and that it hopes to share with the as-yet-uninitiated. Of course, the city known as "The Live Music Capital of the World" would have to promote its major asset, and that's easily done with South by Southwest, an enormous spring event that shows off hundreds of bands and performers in a variety of venues. Slightly smaller, but no less reputable or significant, is Austin City Limits Music Festival, a September mainstay that features regional and national groups representing a wealth of musical genres. Following the theme of local flavor, Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival gets taste buds tingling and beer flowing with its extensive supply of fiery entries, sampled alone or in scrumptious dishes. Just as zesty is Cinco de Mayo Music Festival, whose historic remembrance is often subsumed by the party that accompanies it. Dancers, bands, luscious food, and family activities bring folks out for festivity and gorgeous spring days. And what Texas experience would be complete without a little rodeo action? Luckily, Austin visitors don't have to wonder.
