EDITOR REVIEW: SOUTH CONGRESS AVENUE. This unique, family-owned motel is in Austin's hip, happening SoCo area, and you really can't miss it – look for the tall neon sign that's something of a landmark. Originally built in 1938, the motel has retained its charming retro style without compromising comfort. Each room is individually decorated; some feature wicker or antique maple furniture, and some have saltillo tile floors or wall murals. All have air conditioning and cable TV, and most have a mini-fridge. The kidney-shaped pool, surrounded by well-maintained landscaping, is a wonderful throwback to the 1950s, and the adjacent Latin restaurant serves as a hip hotel eatery. 41 rooms and suites. Set yourself on Austin's pace by booking a room at the Austin Motel down on South Congress Avenue, aka SoCo. There's not a more unique property in the whole city. Decorated with colorful wallpaper and 1960s and 1970s furniture, it reminds us more of a mom-and-pop lodge we'd find off Route 66.
