DOWNTOWN. Many know that Francis Scott Key wrote the national anthem at the Battle of Baltimore, but the seamstress of the Fort McHenry flag, Key’s inspiration for the song, is much less celebrated. Mary Pickersgill, whose home is now a Baltimore museum, was the seamstress, and a visit to her historic War of 1812 – era manor is the perfect addition to a family tour of Baltimore attractions. The Star-Spangled Banner Museum within even offers tourists a glimpse of the original star spangled banner.
