About Baltimore Events
There's no shortage of annual holidays and festivals in the city of Baltimore. A wealth of fine neighborhoods, civic institutions and meeting facilities as well as its attractive harborfront location provide many of the resources necessary to host and attract successful, interesting events. Its citizens come from a variety of cultural backgrounds, and many of their forefathers' traditions have been integrated into Baltimore's civic life. The Showcase of Nations Ethnic Festival series is held multiple weekends June to October, and each festival focuses on a different national or cultural heritage, such as African-American, Greek, Russian, Caribbean or Nigerian. In addition, several of Baltimore's picturesque neighborhoods, such as Federal Hill, Fell's Point and Little Italy, host community events, and the crowd- and pedestrian-friendly Inner Harbor makes the perfect backdrop for the citywide holiday celebrations. In the summer, spend a Friday night watching a movie under the stars at the Little Italy Open Air Film Festival or attend a fireworks show in the Inner Harbor on New Year's Eve of the Fourth of July. Still other local happenings cater to people with specific interest and skills. One of the city's largest annual competitions, the Baltimore Running Festival, is highlighted by a full marathon, and in addition, a half-marathon, 5K and children's race. If you're looking for something less conventional, come to downtown Baltimore in June for the HonFest, where you'll encounter a host of women donning cat-eye glasses, beehive hair and kitschy apparel ... um, are we back in the 1960s? -- Elizabeth Baxley, 10Best Editor
