BOLTON HILL. This neighborhood gem draws crowds with its unusual, Mediteranean-inspired creations, from pastas and pizzas to fish and steak. Flavorful appetizers such as baby octopus in tomato sauce over polenta and house specials like roasted vegetable and ricotta ravioli with basil tomato and house marinara line the menu. A tasty Sunday brunch includes omelettes, eggs Benedict and three flavors of pancakes. Space is tight, but seating is also available on the outdoor patio.

BUTCHER'S HILL. There is a steady buzz building about this restaurant, and word-of-mouth has made it the hottest place in town for brunch. Regulars love the interesting, nostalgic decor with its kitschy bric-a-brac and colorful accents. The staff is friendly and personable, but it's the fresh, simple food that keeps the place packed each weekend. Don't miss the fluffy omelets filled with fresh toppings, or the homemade muffins and breads, which are some of the best in town. Reservations recommended.

NORTH BALTIMORE. Well-received Gertrude's enjoys a prime location inside the Baltimore Museum of Art. Its name pays homage to chef John Shields' grandmother, who introduced him to cooking, and to Gertrude Stein, who introduced several important artists to the museum. Shields, a local culinary celebrity, produces traditional regional dishes with a contemporary spin. Sunday brunch features an extensive array of specialties: crabmeat omelets, crab cakes served on English muffins with skillet potatoes, and stuffed French toast with honey cream cheese and cinnamon apples. For the best experience, grab a coveted spot on the patio overlooking the sculpture garden.

CANTON. Everything is healthy and fresh at Helen's, which manages to combine upscale cuisine with a relaxed, low-key atmosphere. Pastel colors, interesting folk art and romantic candles provide a soothing backdrop for great meals that make the most of fresh local ingredients. The menu includes numerous vegetarian options, including eggplant and provolone wrapped in pesto flatbread, but there are also excellent seafood dishes and specialties such as the pepper-crusted pork chops in apple and leek puree. The wine list is eclectic and the desserts are imaginative and homemade. On warm evenings, the patio is the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion. Weekend brunch features gourmet omelets, best served with a mimosa or bloody Mary.

FEDERAL HILL. This celebrated restaurant has a reputation for upscale seafood, but it also serves a terrific brunch. The dining room and the sun-swept terrace look out over the harbor and toward the city's skyline and boast fabulous views. The brunch lineup features a range of delicious seafood dishes, including crab cakes, fried shrimp, and barbecued salmon, not to mention breakfast classics like omelets and French toast. Enjoy live jazz while you dine. The brunch buffet is $33.

The multi-level hall accommodates 1600 guests, and several sleek bars and dining areas add to the appeal. The Tavern's lovely seafood specialties and beefeater favs are best when consumed with the menu's recommended brew pairings. ROLAND PARK. The name of the place means "Crazy Man," and if you pass it by, you're crazy, man. This fantastic local place bursts with color, from decor to cuisine. You'll find a host of classic dishes (including basic tacos and burritos), along with the eatery's own take on Mexican cuisine. The fresh catch of the day, for example, is baked in a crust of rainbow corn chips and is as much a pleasure to the eye as it is to the palate. Other upscale options include grilled salmon with banana salsa or crab cakes served with sweet potato fries. The brunch menu offers classics with a Southwestern twist such as a scrambled egg and chorizo burrito with mashed black beans, avocado, cilantro, tomato and cheese.

HAMPDEN. A casual cafe with a downhome feel, this restaurant was once a hardware store. It no longer sells hammers and socket sets, instead serving all-American comfort food in appealingly nostalgic atmosphere. Wonder where they got the name? FELLS POINT. For almost 30 years, this Fells Point landmark has been the place to go for fresh, perfectly prepared mussels.
