HAMPDEN. Hampden is widely accepted as the "real Baltimore," where you can go to hear and see the city's natives in action. It is also a university center; this area of Baltimore is home to Loyola College, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Baltimore. Perhaps due to the student influence, Hampden is known for its wide range of vintage clothing stores, thrift shops, and used furniture stores. DOWNTOWN. Several historic markets are still in operation in Baltimore, but this one stakes its claim for having been in continuous operation longer than any of the others. Since 1782, citizens have gathered here to pick up stables like breads, cheeses and meats. The modernized version offers more upscale options, including a broad range of ethnic items that can be eaten on the premises or packed to go. The crab cakes from Faidley's Seafood are renowned for their quality and make a great gift with true Baltimore flavor. Berger's Bakery is the top spot for sweet treats. Special events are often held here, including musical performances and the popular Preakness Crab Race.

TOWSON. The two things that set this mall apart from the pack are the number of shops – there are more than 200 – and the quality of those shops. Nordstrom, known for its excellent clothing selection, including great shoes and formal wear, anchors Towson along with Hecht's. Specialty shops abound, and include Abercrombie & Fitch, Crabtree & Evelyn, Anthropologie, Godiva Chocolatier, Crate & Barrel, and Gadzooks. FELLS POINT. In historic Fell's Point, this is the market to visit if you want a taste of local flavor at its best. Though many people pick up lunch while they are there, this is also a great choice for local crafts, fresh flowers, specialty foods and gourmet items that make great gifts. The two buildings that make up the market were built in 1785, though the interiors are now thoroughly renovated. Pick up a slab of raspberry crumb cake and enjoy it outside while taking in the waterfront view.

ROLAND PARK. A short trip from the downtown area, The Village is an appropriate name for this collection of shopping outlets. The open, outdoor setting and the collection of attractive, upscale boutiques evokes a charming neighborhood feeling, and concerts in the central courtyard add to the ambience. Top-notch stores in the shopping center include Talbot's and Williams-Sonoma, but most of the shops are local independent merchants instead of well-known chains.

FELLS POINT. Fell's Point derives its name from William Fell, the shipbuilder who purchased the land in 1726. Fell's Point, Jones Town, and Baltimore Town were incorporated in 1773 to create what we know today as Baltimore. Jones Falls stopped the Great Baltimore Fire of 1904, so Fell's Point is still home to over 350 original colonial period buildings including the oldest house in Baltimore (now a museum), which was built in 1765. Today Fell's Point is a mix of commercial and residential buildings. Most people claim the area comes to life at night, but there are many boutiques and antique shops that make a stroll in this nationally registered Historic District a pleasant daytime activity.

MT VERNON. This section of town owes its name to the towering 178-foot monument to our first president, which dominates the area. When this neighborhood was created in 1827, it was considered an upscale, fashionable place to live, and that is still the case today. Lovely, ornate townhomes, relaxing parks and gardens, fine shops, and plenty of special touches such as fountains and statues make this a pleasant, historic place for a stroll. Take in the classic architecture after visiting a gallery or attending a cultural event in lovely Mount Vernon.
