10Best's Baltimore Attractions & Activities
-- Elizabeth Baxley, 10Best Travel Editor
For visitors to Baltimore, the city's appeal lies in both its beautiful location on the Chesapeake Bay and its rich history. Along the gorgeous Inner Harbor lie the National Aquarium, the family-friendly Port Discovery museum and the Pride of Baltimore II. For history buffs, Fort McHenry is a must-see. Its shining moment in history is Francis Scott Key's composition of the "Star-Spangled Banner" during the War of 1812. For the rest of the story, you may visit the Flag House, the historic home of seamstress Mary Pickersgill, who created the actual flag that flew over Fort McHenry and inspired Key to write the anthem. Baltimore also has a long standing tradition in the arts, and you'll notice this from visiting the city's museums. In North Baltimore, the Museum of Art houses a wealth of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, while the American Visionary Art Museum displays the work of contemporary artists without any formal training.
