CANTON. Located on Canton Square, this classic seafood features a downstairs bar and an attractive dining room, flanked with red decor and a fireplace, above. Highlighting the menu are the raw bar and tasty seafood platters, available with crab cakes, lobster, shrimp or scallops. For landlubbers, filet mignon, wrapped in bacon, or encrusted in blue cheese, is difficult to top. A wide variety of sandwiches also available.

INNER HARBOR. This beloved chain of steakhouses bills itself as "Home of Serious Steaks," and a single visit will tell you that's more than a marketing slogan. The steaks, known for their sizzle, get that characteristic sputter thanks to a dollop of butter dropped on the broiler-hot cuts. Not for calorie-counters but for true steak lovers, Ruth's Chris is also known for great service, an extensive wine list, and an atmosphere of comfortable elegance. Reservations recommended.

DOWNTOWN. Eclectic and fun, this restaurant takes French and Continental dishes and gives them an innovative update. Guests must have a reservation and ring the doorbell (don't try the door – there's no handle) before they can enter the confines of this quirky, quiet local favorite. They decor is something to behold, with a tin ceiling, eccentric art and remnants left over from the establishment's stint as a speakeasy during Prohibition. Menu options include the consistently popular bouillabaisse, tender blackened lamb with zesty mustard cream, and an ever-changing array of fabulous desserts. Reservations required.

OWINGS MILLS. One of Baltimore's finest eating establishments, this is a masculine, club-like setting for power meetings or special occasions, and the New American cuisine never disappoints. Tournedos of barbecued tuna with fried oysters and country ham, and venison served alongside orange-infused wild rice are two uniquely satisfying and beautifully presented options. The sophisticated dining room and the popular bar are great places to see and be seen, and a counter near the kitchen is perfect for people who are dining alone. Reservations recommended.

FELLS POINT. At Ze Mean Bean, quirky coffeehouse atmosphere, an intriguing Eastern European menu, and live music add up to a uniquely pleasant experience. The menu features everything from chicken Kiev to vegetable pierogies, but you can visit simply to enjoy a relaxing cup of fresh coffee, great local jazz and some of the best bread pudding to be found anywhere. Pastries, cakes and other treats are served with care by the congenial staff.

INNER HARBOR. This contemporary restaurant has a solid reputation for its delicious specialty – cheesecake! The menu offers everything from appetizers to steaks to Sunday brunch, and the dessert list always includes at least 40 items, so every sweet tooth is sure to be satisfied. If you can't decide between two cheesecakes, simply compromise: Eat one, and take one home to savor later. The restaurant gets added flair with harbor views and an outdoor patio.

INNER HARBOR. In the elegant Hyatt Regency, this restaurant with the astrological moniker has one of the most amazing views in the city. The upscale, nautical-themed decor is attractive and low-key, ensuring that only the cuisine competes with the stellar skyline. The menu features a wealth of treasures from the sea, prepared in creative, contemporary style. Among the temptations you'll find are Chesapeake paella, chock full of seafood, chicken and sausage, and sauteed rockfish topped with crabmeat and pine nuts.

LITTLE ITALY. A traditional favorite for years, this Little Italy restaurant's enjoys the patronage of dedicated locals. Start off with one of their terrific, if addictive, salads, generously topped with the special house dressing. Then move on to classic dishes like light and airy gnocchi, cheese-topped baked manicotti, and huge plates of rich fettuccini Alfredo. Great veal and seafood dishes are available as well. Sop up any extra sauce with a slab of fresh garlic bread, and you are sure to leave with your appetite sated. Perfect for meals after shows or events, thanks to the latest hours in the area.

Located in the charming Fell's Point district, the seating areas have a colorful and casual atmosphere, with two intimate dining rooms that are perfect for small or larger groups. The incredibly fresh seafood has earned an excellent reputation; the selection of fresh catch often includes pompano, bream, turbo, red snapper or sea bass. Have your choice grilled in olive oil, lemon and capers or cooked in parchment with mild cheese and served over couscous.
