9. Melissa's Restaurant & Bar

No matter what time of day you come to Melissa's, you'll be warmly greeted and made to feel at home. The restaurant, housed in a circa-1928 building, resembles a chalet on the outside and a log cabin on the inside. It's also a local institution and a great place to meet friends. The Canadian cuisine makes the most of local ingredients, and you'll find a selection of Alberta steaks, salmon, trout, ribs, chicken and pork. Lighter appetites will be pleased by the handmade burgers, deep dish pizzas and pasta options. In the evenings, locals gather at the upstairs bar and watch TV or play pool while they drink. We went to Melissa's in Feb and all 12 of us thought it very second rate. Our meals were very disappointing. The only positive was one of the children who ordered pizza. The veggie burger was dry and uninteresting, the casserole and steak meals were all declared disappointing and overpriced. We wouldn't dine there again unless it was purely for pizza and there are better places to go in Banff.
