ST. MICHAEL PARISH. Housed in a building that was originally constructed in 1800 to accommodate the Harbour Police, the Bayshore Complex today is a thoroughly renovated shopping center with a variety of boutiques and specialty shops. An attractive environment for shopping, the complex even has an eye-catching waterfall and pond, complete with fish, near the entrance.

ST. MICHAEL PARISH. Located about a mile from downtown Bridgetown, Barbados's cruise ship terminal doubles as a fine duty-free shopping arcade. With about 25 shops and numerous stalls, the variety is quite good: bargain hunters can find deals on jewelry, china, crystal, linen, clothing, music and assorted other items, most of which are duty-free. Just outside is a chattel village where shopaholics will be pleased to find a plethora of locally made arts and crafts.

ST. MICHAEL PARISH. Bridgetown's main shopping district is Broad Street. A wide array of duty-free shops sells jewelry, liquor, cameras, perfume and clothing. Be sure to bring a passport or plane ticket as proof of your visitor status.

Chalky Mountain Pottery

ST. JOSEPH PARISH. The ground underneath the little hamlet of Chalky Mount has supplied local potters for centuries. Today, the village is home to numerous pottery studios, many of which are open to the public. This is an excellent place to purchase one-of-a-kind, handmade pieces that will serve as functional and beautiful reminders of your visit to Barbados.

Chattel House Village

CHRIST CHURCH PARISH. Chattel houses were colorful, moveable houses that plantation workers lived in. Holetown and St. Lawrence Gap each have a "Chattel House Village," where the structures have been transformed into quaint local shops offering crafts, beach clothes and souvenirs.

ST. MICHAEL PARISH. Housed in the historic Colonnade building on Bridgewater's Broad Street, this mall has more than 30 shops selling duty-free jewelry and perfume, beachwear and souvenirs. An exceptional food court keeps those hunger pangs at bay.

ST. MICHAEL PARISH. You'll find this grouping of workshops halfway between the cruise ship terminal and downtown Bridgetown. Visit this spot to watch the artisans at work and to purchase leather goods, batik clothing and fabrics, baskets, carvings and pottery.

ST. JAMES PARISH. Actually a resort complex with two shopping centers, Sunset Crest has a wide variety of shopping options that should satisfy die-hard shoppers as well as folks who just need to pick up some sunscreen or a book to read. In addition to a branch of the Cave Shepherd department store, there are several high-end boutiques, a supermarket, restaurants, banks and a pharmacy.
