OLD TOWN. The Salo de Cent ("Hall of the Hundred") dates from the 15th century and was the site of one of Europe's first republican parliaments. A regular host to numerous civic functions and ceremonies and noted for its magnificent Gothic and neo-classic trappings.

MONTJUÏC. Star-shaped 18th century castle sits atop Barcelona's most famous mountain. Storied history includes stints as a fortress and prison. Presently a fascinating military museum. Fabulous view is alone worth the trek up the mountain. METRO: Take the metro to Paral-lel and change to the funicular (doesn't run during the winter months) and then by cable car to the top; or, Bus #50.

OLD TOWN. Built in the 1380's and followed by a rich, ongoing history. Initially served as the center of operations for the league of Catalan sea traders. From 1771 through 1994, this was home to Barcelona's stock exchange, while also hosting the Barcelona School of Fine Arts (a school that produced alumni such as Picasso and Joan Miró) from 1849 to 1970. Presently the site of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and a public library.

OLD TOWN. This 18th century Baroque palace was originally commissioned by Peruvian viceroy Manual Amat in honor of his wife. Luxurious ensemble of period decor. Presently a stamp and postal museum and serves as Barcelona's town council cultural headquarters. Noteworthy exhibition center features work from contemporary Catalan authors. Periodic exhibitions.

LA RAMBLA. Built in the 1880's, this domed structure was the first large-scale undertaking for architectural visionary Antonio Gaudi and reflects his innovative fusion of Gothic and Moorish sensibilities. This beautiful structure was built in honor of the famed architect's mentor and guardian and is named for him. Listed as a World Heritage location by UNESCO in 1984, the site initially served as an urban residence and is now employed as an outstanding theater, museum and library.

LA RAMBLA. This historic 11th century palace was home to Spanish royalty for centuries. The Palau is an excellent place to stop along the Ramblas to take a break, sit in the sun and view the city going on around you. Located in a notably fashionable section of town that draws tourists and the city's more interesting characters. Great sightseeing and fun.
