Erected in 1370, the castle was designed with an appearance of age, to convey an aura of prestige, due to owner Thomas Hungerford's desire to enter affluent society. The castle has since enjoyed a long, storied, and sometimes dark history, changing ownership numerous times and surviving periods of political upheaval. Much of the structure is in ruins, although certain portions are well intact.   (© 10Best)
