4. Kennet and Avon Canal

Founded in 1810 to link Reading with Bath and Bristol, the canal is comprised of 29 locks, and enjoyed 141 years of service. The advent of the railway looked to sound the death knell for the canal, but it was reopened in 1990 following a campaign by concerned citizens. The scenic landscape makes this a popular site for strolls and boat excursions.   (© 10Best)
