BATON ROUGE. Family-owned and operated, this comfortable restaurant is a welcoming, neighborhood presence. The cuisine takes its cues from Louisiana, adding a dash of spice, a lot of seafood, and plenty of tradition. Fried or grilled seafood platters offer good eating, and you can craft your own pasta dish with a choice of noodles, meats, vegetables, and sauces. Specialties include Eggplant Caroline (eggplant medallions topped with crawfish etouffee) and Shrimp Orleans (crab-stuffed shrimp wrapped with catfish strips, fried, and served with brandy-tarragon sauce). Homemade Mississippi mud pies are made fresh daily!

BATON ROUGE. J. Alexander's is ideal if you want time alone with someone special or just need to maintain focus for a business dinner. The upscale chain offers a range of dishes, most of which are homemade. If your appetite's light, the fresh fish sandwich, dressed with rémoulade, is a good bet, and burgers are unfailingly good. Other considerations include grilled fresh fish, baby back ribs, luscious prime rib, and flavorful, generous pasta dishes. Wines by the bottle and the glass also available.
