BATON ROUGE. Established in 1934, this Cajun-styled restaurant is family-owned and run, a labor of love that's become an area dining tradition. Terrific ingredients ensure that each dish is at its best, and with great steaks, fresh seafood, and an oft-frequented oyster bar, there's certain to be something for every guest. Time-tested recipes and skillful cooking also add to the mix, and a dash of Louisiana spice shakes up the status quo just enough to titillate the taste buds. Children's menu available.

BATON ROUGE. For more than two decades, this seafood restaurant has taken care of Baton Rouge's seafood cravings. Fresh fish comes in daily, so you know that the quality is good, and a bit of Louisiana flair graces every dish. The broad menu, which offers fried, blackened, and broiled seafood, features everything from shrimp and crabs to a seafood platter piled with ocean-fresh delicacies. If none of that's your style, you can also look to steaks, pastas, and the like. Groups welcomed.

BATON ROUGE. Thanks to Cajun flair, this restaurant offers an innovative twist on the standard seafood establishment. The chef-owner also operates a seafood distribution company, and just-caught ingredients are used unfailingly. The menu, for example, includes fried oysters, stone crab claws, barbecued shrimp, fish filet topped with a fried soft-shell crab, and char-grilled, bacon-wrapped yellow fin tuna. You'll also find steaks, duck and chicken. Kid-friendly selections are available for the little ones.

BATON ROUGE. Set near LSU, this seafood restaurant plies students, visitors and residents alike with a bevy of fresh seafood dishes. Local waters deliver ingredients featured in seafood and chicken pasta, crawfish tails, stuffed crabs, grilled fish, crabmeat au gratin, and all-you-can-eat catfish. If your appetite's substantial, consider fried or broiled seafood platters or plates where one ingredient (crab, shrimp or crawfish) is delivered in seven different recipes! Steaks and chicken are also offered, along with lots of oyster appetizers. Full bar and microbrews available too.

BATON ROUGE. Comfortable and unpretentious, this longtime Baton Rouge presence is tops for fresh seafood and much more. Adorned with sports memorabilia and TVs, Phil's welcomes professionals, college students and everyone in-between. Fresh, raw oysters are perennial favorites, although the seafood platter is a bit of heaven in itself. You'll also find amaretto shrimp, chicken parmesan, barbecued shrimp, gumbo and po'boys. You might want to linger a bit to finish the substantial portions or have a bite of dessert. Kids' menu available too.

Their rustic character is a fitting complement to the range of seafood dishes, which feature plenty of local options, including catfish, crawfish, alligator, frog legs and barbecued shrimp. GONZALES. Just outside of Baton Rouge, this popular family-run restaurant has been in operation since 1971. It's a great favorite of families and others in the area, and you can tell by the crowds that show up regularly. Although steaks and chicken are available, the menu specializes in Louisiana-style seafood dishes, including fried shrimp and catfish, po'boys, seafood gumbo, soft-shell crabs, and oysters. Three dining rooms and a lounge provide plenty of space, and daily specials are available at lunch and dinner.
