This is one of those lovely spots in Beaufort to sit, relax and watch the tides ebb and flow or eye the yachts and sailboats lazily pass by. Lined by shops and restaurants, this area is the hub of Beaufort's everyday life. Numerous benches and swings to accommodate parents and children. A great place for a picnic.

This Federal-style mansion, circa 1790's, has enjoyed a vivid past. The Marquis de Lafayette was once a house guest and spoke to the townspeople from its steps. It was later captured by the Union troops during the Civil War and used as their headquarters.

This once majestic sanctuary was burned and destroyed by Prevost's British troops in 1779. It has stood in ruins for over 120 years. Despite this fact, it is still used for special religious services. All that remains are its stately columns and building shell.

St. Helena's congregation was founded in 1712 and the sanctuary was later built in 1724. It survived the Yamassee War, the Revolutionary War, and the Civil War during which it was used as a military hospital (it is said that doctors used gravestones as make-shift operating tables).
