This once majestic sanctuary was burned and destroyed by Prevost's British troops in 1779. It has stood in ruins for over 120 years. Despite this fact, it is still used for special religious services. All that remains are its stately columns and building shell. (© 10Best) Take a side trip off I-95 near Beaufort, South Carolina, to experience the beauty of this special place. Four brick walls with arched doorways and window openings still stand, as do massive columns rising out of the flat earth. The church didn't survive the American Revolution intact but was rebuilt a few decades later, only to be burned by General Sherman's army during the Civil War.
