This Federal-style mansion, circa 1790's, has enjoyed a vivid past. The Marquis de Lafayette was once a house guest and spoke to the townspeople from its steps. It was later captured by the Union troops during the Civil War and used as their headquarters.

This 10,000 square foot museum is one of the largest in the southeast. Exhibits, displays, artifacts and papers depicting the colorful history of the station during the French, Spanish, Colonial, Revolutionary, War of 1812, Civil, and the Spanish American wars. Also, while at Parris Island, check into the tours available of the historical sites of Fort San Felipe, Santa Elena and San Marcos which date back to the 16th century. Museum and village tours are free. Directions: Take US 21S to Route 280. Take 280 until it turns into 802 – you will see a sign for Parris Island.

Located nine miles southeast of Beaufort via US 21. A fascinating place to learn and retrace the history of Gullah culture in the Lowcountry. Museum contains exhibits and rare books. Penn Center was the first school established for freed slaves.
